On February 14, 2003, the U.S. Department of Transportation initiated new comprehensive regulation affecting the packaging, labeling, & marking of
diagnostic specimens. These new rules, known as HM226 regulate diagnostic
specimens in the United States for the first time. They constitute a
significant alignment of U.S. rules and the international regulations of the
United Nations.
TheU.S. Postal Service adopted most of the new U.S. DOT rules
for Infectious Substances and Diagnostic Specimens on June 6, 2003, effective
June 12, 2003.
